Backfire

In October 1997, some Israeli Mossad (Sectret Service) agents were sent into Jordan to murder a terrorist leader of the Hammas group in retaliation for some recent bombings in Israel . It backfired badly. Not only did the assassination fail, the agents were caught. The Israeli government was forced to admit the plan and also the Israeli had to release a Spiritual Leader of the Hammas group as well, to placate the irate Jordanian king. It was fortunate that this act of international espionage did not lead to full scale war.
