George Reeves: A super actor
This guest post from Margaret Mills
My favorite television actor is a man who had a huge impact on me as child. Back in my day, when a black and white television was the norm, George Reeves played Superman. I would rush home after school every Wednesday, peddling my bicycle like a madman to make sure I was plopped down and in front of our television at 3:30. As the familiar theme song started, I would bounce with anticipation, preparing to go flying with my hero.
George had a duel role in Superman, also portraying ace reporter Clark Kent. His Clark was hardly the bumbling fool that Christopher Reeve would portray twenty years later. This Clark Kent was a man of action, who hid his super identity behind a pair of thin glasses. As a child, there was something else about Reeves portrayal of Superman. He had the ability to radiate a warmth and kindness that flooded our small television. When I watched Superman, I would smile and laugh and worry, and at the end of the program feel like he was my friend.
A number of years ago I was able to watch George Reeves as Superman on Directv. Even after all these years, I could still feel the magic. For that, and for all the wonderful memories he gave me, he will always be my favorite television actor.
