There has been a false notion that quality education is based on the school’s status. For a lot of the Filipinos, the mentality is: “If you are studying in a University, you’re smart. If you’re studying in an ordinary school without the university status, then you’re not smart.” As an educated Filipina, I believe that quality education lies primarily with the competence of the educator. That is why teachers who never cease learning earn my respect.
I have heard that there are foundations that gives scholarships for teachers. And one of these foundations is the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation which called their program as the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship. This fellowship aims to recruit, prepare and retain effective teachers for the students and schools who need them most. The foundation is open to all high achievers with an undergraduate degree in arts and sciences. However, their program is only available to U.S citizens and permanent residents who are committed and believes in the fellowship’s goal of raising the quality of education in America.
A qualified fellow shall be granted with a $30,000 stipend, admission to a master’s degree program at a participating university, preparation for teaching in a high-need urban or rural secondary school, support and mentoring throughout the three-year teaching commitment, guidance toward teaching certification and a lifelong membership in a national network of Woodrow Wilson Fellows who are intellectual leaders.
Teaching has always been a noble profession. Although it is not as financially rewarding as other professions, the satisfaction of learning and imparting your wisdom to innocent minds is priceless. It would last more than a lifetime!
